From DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities

———–

Once upon a time, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities was the #1 state arts agency in the country for social media.  Now, they’re #2 on Facebook.  Why, you ask?  Last week, California and Arizona’s arts agencies proposed a challenge – the race to 10,000 Facebook ‘likes’.

One problem – they left lil’ ol’ D.C. out of the race. Since then, we’ve stepped to both states and declared WAR. We need your support to show why D.C. has the strongest supporters of the arts in the country. “Like” us on Facebook”. If you already like us, tell a friend and post this message on your page.

Ditch or Date – Love can be tough

This briefing will discuss the impact of possible deficit reduction measures affecting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security on communities of color and explore key finding from recent reports by the Commission to Modernize Social Security and Families USA.

In March of 2011, the Insight Center for Community Economic Development and Global Policy Solutions convened the Commission to Modernize Social Security, comprised of experts from or representing African American, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latino, and Native American communities. The commission recently released Plan for a New Future: The Impact of Social Security Reform on Communities of Color which includes proposals to extend Social Security’s long term solvency while also modernizing the program to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse society.
Families USA recently released Medicaid: A Lifeline for Blacks and Latinos with Serious Health Care Needs, which examinesMedicaid’s critical role in providing access to health care for blacks and Latinos.

Cirque du Soleil’s touring show Michael Jackson: The Immortal has just added 17 additional dates ** to its 2011-2012 tour schedule.

Tickets for the current dates & newly added dates are on sale now.

The new dates will bring the hugely successful show to Boise, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Washington DC, and many other metropolitan areas, giving even even more audiences the chance to catch Cirque du Soleil’s latest spectacle in the flesh. Unlike your average Cirque spectacle, this is an arena-only show, and it’s the perfect chance to celebrate both the music of the late Michael Jackson, and the visual expertise of the Cirque du Soleil.

“From the moonwalk to the iconic choreography we’ve seen in ‘Thriller’ and ‘Beat It’ and ‘Bad’ — all his mini-movies and music videos — mix that with the world of Cirque… You shake it and can literally turn it on its head. Imagine taking the moonwalk to new levels, to new heights. Being able to do the moonwalk literally as if you’re on the moon, all the way around the arena.” – Jamie King of the Los Angeles Times.

The extra dates now bring the total number of North American tour stops to 47, and new tickets have also been released for many of the already-announced dates. Be sure to check the Cirque du Soleil website for full ticket details, and for the special club-member pre-sale.

Passions and lies run rampant in this tragedy of love and life destroyed by deceit and jealousy. Shakespeare’s drama reveals the power of manipulation as Iago undermines Othello in a deadly game of betrayal.

Director Robert Richmond reunites with members of the creative team behind last season’sHenry VIII, including Tony Award-winning costume designer William Ivey Long, set designer Tony Cisek, and composer Anthony Cochrane.

Find out what’s happening in rehearsal, backstage, and beyond on the new Folger Theatre Production Diary blog. Actor Louis Butelli (Roderigo) takes you behind-the-scenes and offers entertaining and informative observations about the process of bringing Othello to the stage.

Read Robert Richmond’s Director’s Notes.  Read Michele Osherow’s Dramaturg’s Notes.

Run Time: Approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one 15-minute intermission.

This production is appropriate for ages 8+, and parental guidance is suggested. Othello contains violence and adult situations, and this production uses haze and strobe light effects.

Free, four-day program in DC on Cancer Issues

The deadline is rapidly approaching to apply for our fifth, all-expenses-paid, educational program on cancer issues. The program runs from December 11-14, 2011, in Washington DC. Experts will speak on the record, with plenty of time for Q&A. Topics will include: the latest research and its implications for cervical, prostate, breast and other cancers, along with behavioral and social issues. Leading experts will discuss controversies related to screening and treatment; the agenda will include at least one field trip to a relevant location in the nation’s capital. This program is for US-based journalists. Apply by 5:00 PM EST, Monday, October 17 , 2011. Click here for more information and to apply.

An explosion of genetic understanding has opened new avenues of research on cancer, in all its complexity. Both treatment and prevention could ultimately be transformed by new knowledge of oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and the molecular defects that drive cancer. We are coming to understand more and more about the association between behavior and lifestyle and the susceptibility to cancer development. This four-day immersion in cancer issues will help journalists understand the latest research and its implications for cervical, prostate, breast and other cancers. Leading experts also will discuss controversies related to screening and treatment; the agenda will include at least one field trip to a relevant location in the nation’s capital. This is NPF’s fifth on-the-record cancer issues program, to be held in Washington, D.C. December 11-14. Resources from last year’s program are here. Fellowships include airfare, lodging and most meals.   The deadline to apply is 5:00 PM EST Monday, October 17, 2011.   Applications from outside the US and Canada will not be considered.

Sixteen fellowships will be awarded to selected print, broadcast and online journalists.  Applications are encouraged from journalists who have experience covering the social, economic and societal impact of cancer, as well as those with a background in science and medical reporting. To apply:

  • Fill out the online application form.
  • Submit a letter of support from a supervisor (if you are an independent journalist you may include a letter from a previous supervisor or editor you work with frequently).
  • Submit two samples of your journalistic work.  If you’re an editor, send samples of work you have edited.

Applications must be received by 5:00 PM EST Monday, October 17.  Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.  Applications from outside the US and Canada will not be considered. Selected journalists will be notified 2 to 4 weeks after the application deadline.

Cirque du Soleil’s buzzy, anticipated show, Iris—which is about filmmaking, and was created specifically for the Kodak Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center—had its official premiere on Sunday, Sept 25th with two shows, one each at 5 and 9 p.m. After the shows’ confetti-filled, acrobatic finale, guests streamed out of the theater for an after-party on a closed-down Hollywood Boulevard, overseen by Cirque’s Montreal-based operations manager for special events, Marie Josée Adam, with production by Entertainment Lighting Services led by Robert Chambers Pullman. There, they found the long, sprawling space completely blanketed in red carpet and transformed for the evening into a look inspired by a huge editing table.

The thick crowd of about 5,000 walked the carpet to a central bar meant to appear as if it were wrapped in film. Giant partitions meant to look like lengths of film divided the space into various zones, including a V.I.P. lounge, a red darkroom-inspired space, a dessert lounge, and—at the far end—a Ferris wheel that offered a rare viewpoint over the action. The entire event space measured about 35,000 square feet. MORE >>
