The Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute presents an annual award event at the Historic Lincoln Theater in Washington, DC called the Paul Robeson “Here I Stand” Award Gala.

Some of our past honorees have been Harry Belafonte, Dick Gregory, Dr. John Hope Franklin, and Ms. Judith Jamison. We are extremely pleased and honored to have Ms. Rita Moreno as our honoree at our 2010 gala planned for Saturday evening June 12, 2010 from 7:30pm to 10:00pm.

The featured portion of our event is a 75 minute interview with Ms. Moreno on stage by actress and arts commentator Ms. Jennice Fuentes.

Performing in honor of Ms. Moreno are Clavekasi Dance Studio, Furia Flamenca, Dance Asia Aliance, Dance Institute of Washington and the Hung Tao Choy Mei “Lucky Lions and Thunder Drums”.

Master of Ceremonies for the evening is Mr. Omari Amir Daniels. These events are our way of honoring Paul Robeson and those who we believe conduct themselves as Paul once said “make no separation between their work as artists and their work as human beings.”

A private reception will be held for Ms. Moreno from 5:00pm to 6:30pm at the Hamiltonian Gallery located at 1353 U Street next door to the Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute and one block from the Lincoln Theater.

Washington DC’s U Street was considered the Black Broadway during segregation. There’s an old saying that “before there was Harlem there was U Street”.
