About This Event

TECH AND…  is a monthly event series where we host thought-leaders from a specific industry and explore new intersections between their field and technology.

TECH AND MUSIC

In August we are exploring the intersection of music and technology. You’ll hear thought leaders and musicians in the DC scene share how the distribution of songs and albums has been shaped by the internet’s free market, how the relationship between record labels and artists has adjusted to the times, and what the future of music looks like in a digital world.

Date: Friday, August 25
Time: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Location: General Assembly DC, 1776 | 1133 15th St. NW, 8th Floor WDC 20005
Cost: FREE, but REGISTRATION is required

Why It Matters:
The omnipresence of technology has rapidly transformed lives over the last decade (remember, the iPhone was only released in 2007). Now, it’s rare to go about a regular day without interacting with tech — whether it’s an alarm app that wakes you up, your Nest Thermostat-regulated apartment, or the software you use at work. Staying ahead of the innovation curve and being able to predict the future of tech in various industries has never been more important — both at work and at play.

THE GAME OF Monopoly® – without a board?

That’s right! Today, we take to the Smithsonian Museums to secure some of the best property throughout history, space, and our nation’s capital. The winner will be the one who earns enough property by earning points through various challenges (Monopoly themed) and collecting enough items that can be traded in for particular property – related to the Smithsonian.

Put on your top hat and grow funny mustaches and take CHANCES as you search for clues and participate in incredibly fun and exciting challenges against each other – that will become necessary to further your monopoly over the National Mall and the Smithsonian’s. Look for hidden “community chest” items in certain areas floating around the museums (that may earn or cost you money/points).

How does it work?

  1. Upon arrival you will be broken up into teams. Each team will be given a list of several clues and instructions (with random items to find to collect points) . The items are all of little or no cost. (Note: If requested upon arrival we will put you on a team with any friends or other colleagues you may know.)
  2. The list will also contain a location where each team must check in by a certain time. Each team should take whatever items it has and proceed to that location by the designated time. If you are late, you lose points. Teams are not expected to retrieve all of the items listed.

At each location, team members may participate in challenge that will help you gather “clues”. The better you are at the challenge, the more points you can get and perhaps a better clue than the rest of the teams further your monopoly over Washington D.C. This may involve tests of speed, appetite, knowledge, spirit, and the ability to be the most gruesome like in an unusual setting!

  3. Throughout the day, at each location, points will be calculated, teams will get a brief time to rest, and teams will be given a different list of items to retrieve and take to the next location. There will be 3 or 4 different check-ins throughout the Smithsonian’s. At each check-in, teams will be given different instructions, lists and new challenges to complete.
  4. Bonuses are given to the first team to arrive at each respective location. Teams will leave each location in the order in which they arrived. The winning team will be the one that collects the most points, achieves the most valuable prize and gets a Monopoly! Special prizes will be awarded to the top teams.

Throughout the day, you’ll learn about and explore fascinating subjects of a wide range. There are over 100 items listed and what you see depends upon your team’s resolve, speed and ability to have fun!

Note: The race starts at noon sharp!
