“When considering seminal creators in American history, Ives is one of the most interesting subjects. He’s an innovator, an American original who embodies so many of the ideals we claim as culturally significant.  His compositions were essential in defining, and revolutionizing, American music. Through its Celebrating American Composers series, Strathmore applauds the unparalleled contributions of this most exceptional composer.” – Eliot Pfanstiehl, Strathmore Founder and CEO.

This weekend the Strathmore and Post-Classical Ensemble will present a weekend dedicated to the work of one of America’s most transformational composers – Charles Ives – including concerts, performances, workshops and discussions with experts including renowned piano virtuoso Jeremy Denk and baritone William Sharp.  A part of the Strathmore’s Celebrating American Composers series, a sweeping year-long exploration of the dynamic talents and innovations that have shaped American music and its diverse genres, and as an encore to its ambitious Stravinsky Project in 2010 – The Strathmore, in partnership with Post-Classical Ensemble, will embark on The Ives Project, a cross-disciplinary three-day exploration of the work, life, influences and impact of the iconic New Englander Charles Ives from Thursday, November 3 through Saturday, November 5, 2011.  This immersive experience will convene actors, scholars and musicians, including two of the most eminent exponents of Ives’ music—the pianist Jeremy Denk and baritone William Sharp—to tell the story of Ives through live performances, rare recordings, readings from his private diary and letters and expert lectures.

Food Trucks.  Cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, & New York City have been chasing, frequenting, and  scouring the city in search of their favorite food truck vendor for years.  In the past few years DC has been swept away by the food truck phenomenon and this year Bullpen owner Bo Blair came up with what has to be one of the most ingenious concepts of the summer – Truckeroo.  A most interesting experience that takes the food truck experience to a perfect grass roots, festival like level.

The inaugural “Truckeroo I” at Yards Park (near National’s Stadium) was back on June 3rd.  This event begged the immediate thought – “this is a GREAT Friday office get-away”.  You know the deal – it’s Friday, your work is done, it’s a perfect sunny summer day and everyone, including the boss, gets that “2:30 pm, let’s leave early” itch, but the question is where do you go?  The beach is too far, a movie would be such a waste of a beautiful day, and it’s too early for happy hour.  Well the problem is now solved – Truckeroo!!  Great food, great local music, beverages of an alcoholic nature and on June 3rd, there was even a bean bag toss.  Bean bags!!  The only thing missing was an oversized sand box a la personal beach to make it sheer heaven and the attendees ranged from families, to couples, to co-workers – Truckeroo is definitely a “Don’t Miss DC Event”!

Recently some of the hottest R&B artists have been seen in downtown DC.  Fantasia, Tank, Lloyd, Amel Larrieux, and Jon B are just a few of the artists that have been featured at “Unplugged”, a weekly concert series at “The Park on 14th” nightclub.  Every Thursday and Friday night, Beny Blaq Entertainment, The Usual Suspectz and The Park on 14th team up to present some the best Hip Hop, R&B and Neo Soul artists the music industry has to offer, and last Friday night was no exception.

Faith Evans at The Park "Unplugged" Series

The 3rd floor was standing room only and as usual, the featured artist of the night that the audience came to see was not disappointed.  Her reputation as a performer is consistent, always connecting with the audience and no matter what; she does not let her fans down.  It is hard to put your finger on it, but simply put – there is just “Something About Faith” Evans that keeps her fans loyal and always ready for more.

As an artist, Faith Evans has been credited with many titles, awards and nominations.  She is a multi-platinum artist, singer/songwriter, record producer, author, actress, mother and the first female signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Label.  Her career boasts 6 Albums, 6 Grammy nominations, 1 Grammy Award, 4 MTV VMA nominations, 1 MTV VMA award, 2 films, and 1 African American Literary Award; and she has been often referred to as “The First Lady” of Hip Hop…..

maxwell summer 09 tour

Hailed by many as the one of the greatest, long awaited come backs in the record industry of my generation – many are more excited, but I am very excited for the comeback of Maxwell. Gone from us for too long, this brother is a timeless talent. I saw him a million years ago perform live at the taping of Donnie Simpson’s Video Soul (BET) and his voice, energy, vibe – everything eminated raw, unmistakeable talent. Simply real. So when he left the scene, for me there was an understanding – because Maxwell’s talent comes from a place bigger than just album sales, autographs, photo ops, and concerts. He is clearly fused with his talent – they are one being in the same. Some will be fans, loving his music, but if that day back in 1995 (I think) was to be the last time I would ever see him – I knew I was in the presence of something undefinable. And it is in that light, to me, he will always remain…..

However as the musical muses would have it – Maxwell has been out and about and busier than ever as he graces us with his voice, his talent and his songs after a 6 year performance hiatus. His 3rd album – Now, was released back in 2001 and now his long awaited 4th Album – Blacksummers’night (Columbia Records) has hit stores and fans simply love it – they cannot get enough.   This summer Maxwell just completed a 24-city club and theater tour, along with a few Canadian dates and recently has announced his Fall US arena shows tour – slated to begin in late September.

Samsung knows the value of Maxwell and his return as they launch Samsungs AT&T Summer Krush – a limited engagement music tour featuring some of the hottest music artists today. The third iteration of Summer Krush will hit Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Seattle with a different top recording artist in each city and a few select cities will host private engagements. More information will be posted soon on Samsung AT&T Summer Krush details, events and how you can win tickets to a show near you.

R&B singer Maxwell is Samsung’s latest edition to the company’s current Summer Krush concert series. As part of the Summer Krush series, Samsung will host nine free shows this summer across the U.S. Samsung executive Paul Golden says, “Samsung AT&T Summer Krush is a great way for us to thank our customers with an amazing concert experience.” Daughtry kicked off the event on July 17th with a performance at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, Washington. Other artists performing during the Summer Krush series include T-Pain, The Offspring and Dierks Bentley. The remaining dates for Samsung’s Summer Krush are as follows:

  • 7/31 — The Offspring — San Francisco, CA — The Warfield
  • 8/5 — Montgomery Gentry — Dallas, TX — Gilley’s Dallas
  • 8/11 — T-Pain — New Orleans, LA — House of Blues
  • 8/18 — Dierks Bentley — Atlanta, GA — The Tabernacle
  • 8/24 — Darius Rucker — Nashville, TN – Venue TBD
  • 9/2 — Maxwell — Boston, MA – Venue TBD

Now if you haven’t downloaded (legally!!) Maxwell’s Blacksummers’night album – get to it!  Blacksummers’night dropped on July 7th and the album has been received with nothing but love.  The album entered the Billboard 200 at # 1 and according to SoundScanBLACKsummers’night has generated the best overall sales week of Maxwell’s career – selling 316,499 in its first week and reaching #1 on the SoundScan Album Retailer chart and the Current R&B chart.   “Pretty Wings” (the first single off the album) peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart, has spent 13 weeks in the #2 spot on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and  “Bad Habits,” (lead track and second single) has reached #1 Most-Added song at Urban Adult radio (Source: Mediabase)   Both “Bad Habits” and “Pretty Wings” have made the Top 10 of America’s Urban Adult Contemporary charts with Bad Habits” peaking at #7 and “Pretty Wings” holding steady at the #1 slot.

If you didn’t see Maxwell on the Summer leg of his tour, then chances are he is coming to your city on the Fall leg of his tour.  On the summer leg, awesome talents such as Laura Izibor, Mary Mary & Chrisette Michele opened for him separately in various cities.
